I have a real soft spot for vintage crafts. I’m especially smitten on those mixed media collaged plates you occasionally see at the thrift store. You know, the ones where it is a couple dressed in felt with rick rack trim in clothing from the 1800’s. Finally, I’ve broken down and made my own Valentine’s Day version. A little different from the traditional pair with the lady in her veil and the mister with his pipe, but fun nonetheless. With Valentine’ day approaching I thought I’d give them a few fun heart shaped accents.
These funky mixed media collages are really great any time of the year, not just Valentine’s Day. Plus I’m feeling the way they look on a gallery wall (check out this post I wrote on DIY Network about Tips and Tricks for Creating a Gallery Wall). All you need is some thrifted plates, glue and scrap fabric. Ready? Ok let’s do this thing. Supplies
Plates (mine came from the thrift store)
Scrap fabric and felt (I used burlap for my faces)
Cut out shapes from felt and burlap and assemble on your plate. You might need to tweak and trim your designs to make sure everything is the way you want it before you start to glue things down. Take a picture with your cell phone once you have everything placed so you remember the way you want it.
Using tape apply the burlap faces. Burlap is loosely woven so don’t use a ton of wet glue because it will come through. The plates are used are ovals so I cut my faces accordingly.
Referring to your cell phone picture attache the felt pieces to your collage. This is where that photo reference will come in handy. Feel free to add trim and accents with dimension, the more mixed media the better.
Use plate hangers to hang from the wall. These can be found at the craft store or through Amazon. Add the plate people to your gallery wall, give them as a gift to some newlyweds or make a pair for your parents 50th wedding anniversary (my mom is a red head and my dad a brunette).
These plates are also a great kids craft – encourage them to do self portraits or maybe even try monsters at Halloween or their favorite animals!
