Old t-shirts: Everyone has some. Around my house a lot of said old T-shirts are tie-dyed. Not because we love the Grateful Dead, but from years of working in the craft industry. What to do with all those shirts? Summer is here and I have garden fever which gave me an idea – planters! I do love me some plant crafts. I’m sharing a 3 Tiered T-Shirt Planter over on DIY Network but right here right now I’m going to show you how to make this adorable single scoop!

Your T-shirts don’t have to be tie-dye but the more colorful the better. Oh and some basic crochet skills are needed for this project. Trust me. If I can do this, you can.

DIY this With Jennifer Perkins – How to Make T-Shirt Yarn
You can watch this episode of DIY This With Jennifer Perkins to learn all about how to make T-shirt yarn. Check out my DIY Network tutorial for more detailed instructions.
Once you have your T-shirt yarn made roll that baby into a yarn ball and let’s go.

I’m also not going to explain crochet to you. You can go anywhere on the internet and learn how. Crochet your yarn into a LONG strip. No keep going, longer than that.
Once you have your long strip using glue attach the yarn to the planter. Begin at the bottom and coil your little heart out. Determine how low you want your plant to hang and how long you want the strings on the sides of your plant. Keep in mind that jersey stretches, so when you put your plant in the weight will make the pot hang a bit lower.

When you have wrapped almost as much of the pot as your would like start making the hanger. Take a long strip and fold it in half. Fold it in half again. Tie a knot at the top leaving a loop for hanging.

Glue the 4 ends of the hanger to the sides of your pot. Continue wrapping/coiling over the 4 hanger pieces a few pieces.

Insert your plant and hang that bad boy up! So cute right? Let’s talk variations.

Why not give your T-shirt a Cancun cut? Maybe even add some beads to the fringe?

If one strand is good, 3 strands are better. Pop over to DIY Network to see how to make this version.

No t-shirt is safe around these parts! What do you make with your old shirts?

Really fabulous and wonderful to see you on craft schooling Sunday!
This is such a simple and awesome idea and it look great too.
Thanks so much! I loved the look of macrame hanging planters so this was my easier version.
Love this!!! Beautifully done, now I just need to find one of those videos that teach you how to crochet.
Michelle it’s so easy. Well at least the very basic single stitch is. You might try braiding.
Beautiful Jennifer! I think I can try this, but I think I’ll stick with braids. Crocheting isn’t my strong suit.
Heather braiding would work just as well. Heck you could just wrap and glue the tie dye yarn without doing anything to it.
How Pretty! #HomeMattersParty
These are so much fun! I love all the texture and color the tie dyed shirts add!
This is a great way to upcycle some old tees. Thanks for sharing at the Inspiration Spotlight party. Have a great week ahead. Pinned & shared.
Super fun and great repurpose. I tend to donate or make cleaning rags out of old shirts. Better start crafting with them instead! Visiting from Dream to Reality party.
What a brilliant idea. I think these look awesome. Great blog by the way, only just discovered it.
I really like how the braided hanger turned out, the colors are fun too.
Thank you for sharing on the #OMHGWW last week!
Watch for the feature in this coming weeks WW 6-14
