Create a Halloween Gallery Wall Using Art You Probably Already Own

If you are an avid thrifter, regular at the flea markets or an estate sale junkie – you may already have everything you need to create the perfect Halloween gallery wall hanging around your house.  I speak from experience.  With a bit of paint old family photographs get a spooky makeover, felt masks and some double sided tape put portraits in costume and yellowing sheet music gives anything an eerie vibe.

Gallery Walls, Unlike Diamonds, Are Not Forever

First, let me give you some gallery wall advice.  The paintings on your wall don’t have to stay there forever.  No really, you can change them it’s ok I promise.  Maybe even change them seasonally.  Is it going to be a pain in the butt? Maybe, but it will also be totally worth it when you have a giant Halloween themed gallery wall with tons of impact. Most people act like when they hang a gallery wall or even a single piece of art it is stuck there with super glue – it’s not.

Give an Existing Gallery Wall a Halloween Makeover

If changing out an entire gallery wall sounds like Halloween overkill you can always just spice up an existing wall. I didn’t change any art out here I just threw some spiderwebs and vintage honeycomb spiders up.  I did change out what is on the shelf to keep it in theme. Tiny Touches Make a Bold Statement

At the very least you can add some fake spooky drip action under some art you have on the wall.

Shop Your Own Walls First

If you don’t want to mess with rehanging an entire gallery wall instead just make some spooky sub outs. Change the photos or art in the frames to something more fitting of a Halloween gallery wall.  Try using themed stickers or googly eyes over the faces of photos.

Try Adding Some Handmade Touches to Your Halloween Gallery Wall

I love using Halloween as an excuse to display my collection of vintage die cuts, themed picture frames and witchy art but there is always room for some handmade Halloween action.

Add Depth To Your Halloween Gallery Wall

One of my number one tips for creating a gallery wall is don’t keep everything the same size or flat.  Add items of different sizes and with depth to create more visual interest.  Check out Making Medusa to see how a trip to the thrift store and some toy snakes can really create something awesome.

Don’t Forget the Kid Art

If you have littles they may be bringing everything you need for a Halloween gallery wall home from art class. I even have Halloween art that I brought home in the 80’s that my mom saved.  Hanging your child’s art helps their self esteem and validates their creativity.  Plus they get to feel like they are an important part of the decorating process.

Give Your Art A Costume

I have no idea who these two children are.  I actually feel kinda bad that someone dropped these lovely drawings off at a thrift store.  Lucky for them I brought them home and gave them their own spooky felt Halloween costume.  Took all of about 3 minutes and $10. Same concept works great with your own photos if you want to turn a headshot black and white then have it printed up.  Just stick the mask to glass of the picture frame.

Don’t Be Afraid To Deface in the Name of Halloween

Altering Halloween photos can be done several different ways.  If you think you might change your mind about the skeleton, paint on top of the glass.  When you are over it you can scrape it off.  If the people in the art are complete strangers feel no shame in defacing the photo with a paint pen by adding fangs, capes and witch hats.  You can also turn old photos into glow in the dark ghosts!

Tie it All Together With Color

The nice thing about a Halloween gallery wall is that chances are everything will be in black and orange.  Maybe some pops of green or purple.  That being said let the color combo be your guide and it will unify everything you hang.

Start where you are with your Halloween gallery wall.  If you only have a single Halloween print – great start there.  Every year you can add something new to your collection and it will grow. Plus once you have your entire arsenal of art you can repurpose it, move it around, hang it in different rooms and make the pieces feel fresh year after year.  You don’t need a Michaels run or to spend a bunch of money you probably just need some double sided tape, a paint pen and a dig through your garage.  At least I did!

Feeling inspired?  Let me know if you have your own Halloween gallery wall or plan to try one.  I can’t wait to see and am already dreaming about what additions I will be making to mine this year.
