DIY Medusa Halloween Wreath with a Glass-Etched Mirror

A mirror is clearly the perfect starting point for a Medusa Halloween wreath. After all, when looking directly at Medusa could turn you to stone, a reflection was a much safer option. Plus since The Odyssey has created a bit of mythology fever a spooky snake covered wreath seems very apropos.

I love a good DIY project that is a twofer.  This Halloween Medusa wreath can hang on the door to greet trick-or-treaters or in the house so you can check your makeup before you walk out the door.  Indoor or outdoor it’s super easy to make – no really glass etching is not near as tricky as it sounds. OK, let’s go whip up a mirror that would make Perseus proud.

Supplies For Making a Halloween Medusa Wreath

  • Grapevine wreath
  • Green paint
  • Paint brush
  • Round mirror
  • Glass etching cream
  • Hot glue
  • Hot glue gun
  • Plastic Snakes
  • Scissors
  • Black and purple wreath
  • Green ribbon

Technically you could use any type of wreath base you have on hand.  I chose a grapevine wreath because it looked like snakes, but the etched mirror is the star of this show so any base would work.

Step 1: Paint the Grapevine Wreath

Sure, I could have used spray paint and made my life easier but here we are.  Using green paint cover the grapevine wreath.  This is where it starts to look snakey.  Is snakey a word?  It is now.

Step 2: Add the Snakes to Your Medusa Halloween Wreath

Let us not forget the most important asset of our gorgeous gorgon – the snakes in her hair!  Hit the dollar store and load up on different plastic snakes.  The more the merrier and also, be sure to vary the style and size.  I cut many of mine up to weave them into the branches of the grapevines.  Attach with hot glue.

Raise your hand and keep reading if you think plastic snakes make everything Halloween better.

Step 3: Etch Your Mirror with Medusa

Glass etching is surprisingly easy and what makes this Halloween Medusa wreath extra special.  Follow the manufacturer’s instructions but in a nut shell paint on your design, let it sit and rinse it off.  However, please make sure to read the safety instructions. I suggest wearing gloves and even goggles.  You can free hand the design and paint on the cream or cut your own stencil using vinyl.  Both will work.  Make your face super scary or sweet and smiley – remember Medusa started out as a beautiful maiden before Poseidon came along.

Now that you have this entire container of glass etching cream why stop here!  Try these other fun projects.

Step 4: If You Dare to Look Into the Eyes of Medusa

Once my glass had been etched and washed I added raised red glittery stickers in the centers of her eyes.  Since the entire story of Medusa centers around looking at her and being turned to stone it only makes sense to augment her eyes.

Tip: If you love learning about Greek mythology I highly recommend the books of Natalie Haynes but especially Stone Blind, the story of Medusa.

Step 5: The Only Thing Better Than One Halloween Wreath are Two Halloween Wreaths!

You could leave your wreath as is with the mirror, the grape vine wreath and the snakes – but why.  Using a hot glue gun I attached the entire thing to a ready made purple and black tinsel wreath. If you want to add a second wreath you could add any color or style you want I just liked incorporating in a couple of other colors. Plus this trick makes smaller wreaths seem larger and fuller.  If you can’t find a wreath large enough to fit around the edge of your original grapevine wreath you could always use a garland.

Step 6: More is More and Less is a Bore – Especially When it Comes to a Medusa Halloween Wreath

Add any finishing touches to your wreath like extra snakes, twirly floral picks and sparkly green ribbon.  Remember wreaths are not meant to be subtle and minimalism for quitters

Want even more Halloween wreath inspiration?  Of course you do!

Hang Your New Medusa Halloween Wreath

Will you hang this beauty outside in the door in inside on the wall? She looks great both places, I speak from experience.  Wherever she hangs, just remember: admire Medusa’s snakes, glitter and gorgeous gorgon style all you want, but maybe don’t look her directly in the eyes.
