Remember back in December when the article Handmade 2.0 from the New York Times was sweeping the internet with all its talk about Etsy, Get Crafty, The Austin Craft Mafia and more. Well the author of said article, Rob Walker, is back with a full on book entitled Buying In: The Secret Dialogue Between What We Buy and Who We Are. Rob usually writes the Consumed column for The Times, but took time out to write what looks like a fascinating book about how consumers are using brands as a way of expressing themselves. Think Apple and American Apparel. I must admit I have not read much more than the section called “The Punk of Craft” which features me as well as several of my crafty cohorts. I scanned in a section below for you to get a feel for the book. Also in this section look for names like Jenny Hart, Debbie Stoller, Handmade Nation, Craft Congress – the list goes on. My husband and I are fighting over who gets to read the book first.
While you are waiting for Amazon to deliver your copy of Buying In be sure to check out Rob’s blog Murketing in the meantime. Last week he ran interviews with a few ladies of the Austin Craft Mafia: Jenny Hart, Tina Sparkles and Me.
