How to Make Egg Shaped Sidewalk Chalk for Easter

How to make a chalk themed Easter basket.

What do you put in a chalk themed Easter basket like this one I did for DIY Network?  Well chalk duh.  Not just plain white sticks of chalk – I’m talking Neon Jumbo Paint Chalk Markers, Sidewalk Chalk Paint, Chalk Duck Tape, a copy of Chalk on the Wild Side and why not make some homemade chalk eggs while you’re at it.

How to make egg shaped chalk for Easter.

Making chalk is surprisingly easy.  I first made this batch for BlogHer last Easter and thought I would give you the full scoop here.  Your options are only limited by paint color and silicone mold shapes.

Supplies to make chalk shaped Easter eggs.

SUPPLIES

  • Plaster of Paris
  • Kids’ paint
  • Water
  • Silicone baking mold of an egg
  • Disposable cups

Add a small amount of plaster to your disposable cups.  The instructions call for water, but instead use a washable kids paint.  You will want to mix one color at a time as the plaster sets up very quickly.  As in quicker than you can stir six different colors and get them into six egg shaped molds.

Pour your plaster into the molds and sit on a flat surface to harden for at least 24 hours.

Once your eggs have cured pop them out of the mold and put them in an Easter basket.  Think of all the different shapes you could make.  The kids could get arty all summer long!
