Looking for the perfect summer purse but can’t quite find what you are looking for? Did you think about checking the table linens aisle? No really. Don’t underestimate the cute and easy power of a DIY placemat purse. These clever crafty purses are often times no-sew, can be embellished any which way you want (loom flowers anyone) and are the perfect DIY quick clutch. I’ve rounded up a few of my favorites.
My wicker summer time clutch is covered with DIY loomed flowers. This is an old school craft that still really looks cool on several different styles of purses. Check out my post on DIY Network called How to Make a Purse Out of a Placemat with Retro Loom Flowers. I also have this fun episode of DIY This With Jennifer Perkins that talks about how to make these flowers and purses.
Here are a few other DIY placemat purses that I thought were pretty stinking’ cute…

I’ve said it before and I will say it again: everything is better with a pompom on it, including No-Sew DIY Placemat Purses like these by Damask Love. Blank wicker placemats are just begging for some colorful pompoms. Thank you Amber for enlightening me on how to make a round placemat into a rectangular clutch!

When we were children my dad used to always tell my mother: “If the kids took a poop on the rug you would tell them it was the best and cutest poop you ever saw”. I kinda feel that way about all things Oh Joy! including this adorable From This To That: Placemat Purse project from her blog. I’m not comparing her crafts to poop I’m simply saying she can do no crafty wrong in my eyes. I’m in love with this round purse made from you guessed it – placemats!

Placemats come in so many cute colors, shapes and styles. I adore the way Kailo Chic converted this colorful woven placemat into an envelope clutch perfect for summer! Check out her post Craft It – A Summer Clutch (No Sewing Machine Required). Thank heavens because mine is buried in the garage collecting dust.

Need more purse than just a clutch? You can still use a placemat! Check out this DIY Cross Body Bag by Amelia Lawrence for Paper & Stitch. I love the idea of taking the placemat purse concept beyond the clutch.
Next time mama (or papa) needs a brand new bag don’t overlook the placemats. Some of these gorgeous bags were made from placemats found at Walmart and the dollar store. All it takes is a little fringe, a couple of flowers and maybe even a strap.
